Extension rules
Extension type: Automatic with Federal · Form IT-9
If you have been granted a federal extension of time to file with the IRS, you will automatically be granted an extension with Indiana. DOR may also grant extensions for filing and paying certain income tax for those affected by disaster relief. If you have not filed a federal extension, you will need to file Form IT-9 before the tax deadline to receive an extension on your Indiana taxes. You cannot file for an extension after the tax deadline has passed.
If you owe tax: If you owe an income tax liability you must also pay estimated taxes owed and submit Form IT-9. If you owe Indiana state income taxes, you must pay by your filing deadline of April 15th to avoid penalties and interest. To avoid penalties when you owe, you must pay at least 90% of your expected tax liability by the original due date.
If you owe $0: If you have been granted a federal extension of time to file with the IRS, you will automatically be granted an extension with Indiana.
