Do I need to file?

Rhode Island allows taxpayers who have been granted a federal tax extension by the IRS to receive an automatic six-month extension to file their Rhode Island individual income tax return, provided they do not owe any Rhode Island income tax. If you qualify, you are not required to submit a separate state extension request, and your filing deadline is extended from April 15, 2026, to October 15, 2026. If you expect to owe Rhode Island state income tax, you must take additional steps. Taxpayers with a balance due are required to file Form RI-4868, the Rhode Island Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File, and pay any estimated tax owed by April 15, 2026. When filing your Rhode Island income tax return later, be sure to include your payment confirmation number in the designated area on the first page of your Form RI-1040 to ensure your extension payment is properly credited.

    Filing methods

    Online filing

If you filed a federal extension using IRS Form 4868 and expect to owe no Rhode Island income tax because your withholding and credits fully cover your tax liability, Rhode Island automatically grants you a six-month extension. In this case, you do not need to submit a separate extension form to the state. When you file your Rhode Island income tax return by October 15, you should indicate that you filed an extension and include a copy of your federal extension with your return.

    Mail filing

If you expect to owe Rhode Island income tax or did not request a federal extension, you must file a Rhode Island extension directly with the state. To do this, submit Form RI-4868, the Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File, and pay any estimated tax due by the original filing deadline of April 15. Filing the extension and paying any balance due on time helps avoid late-filing penalties, although interest may still apply to unpaid taxes.
