You automatically have until October 15 to file before we charge a late filing penalty. Do not request an extension to file. To avoid other penalties and interest, you must pay any tax owed by the due date and file your return by October 15
If you owe tax: If you owe money and need to submit an extension payment via methods listed. Make an electronic payment for free using Minnesota e-Services. If you are mailing a paper payment, download and print a payment voucher (often called Form MN-EXT, M1ES or PV80, depending on your return type) and mail it with your check to the department.
If you owe $0: Minnesota grants an automatic 6-month extension to file your personal income tax return, moving the deadline to October 15. You do not need to file a formal extension form unless you are making a tax payment or require more time than the automatic extension provides.
