Extension rules

Generally, you automatically get a 6-month extension to file your Massachusetts income tax return as long as you've paid at least 80% of the total amount of tax due on or before the due date
If you owe tax: Automatic unless you owe a tax liability then you must file form M-4868 along with your estimated tax payment by April 15th

You must calculate what you owe and make a payment by April 15 so that your total year-to-date payments cover at least 80% of your total tax liability. If you fail to hit that 80% mark, your extension is voided entirely.
